Most of those who work in the Clearinghouse do so for 2-3 hours once a week. It is not a full time job, not is it designed to be. In fact, we prefer people to be in the clearinghouse 2 days a week or less. Love INC fully expects that you’ll find plenty of time to still be involved in your church and your family. Plenty of our volunteers take vacations, visit families and a miss occasions. Our hope is that once trained our volunteers stay for a minimum 6-12 months.
2. People are going to be upset with me.
The majority of interactions in our Clearinghouse are very positive. Most people are looking for someone to listen to them and our volunteers are trained to listen, to ask questions and to minister. For every one person who is frustrated or upset you’ll listen to 10 people needing a friend. Plus, when a conversation goes badly, the Clearinghouse Coordinator gets to step in and work out a resolution to the problem.
3. I don’t know how to start.
First off you complete a volunteer application and we’ll schedule a time for orientation. When those two items are complete you’ll need to connect with the Clearinghouse Coordinator about when you can start. Currently our Clearinghouse is open Tuesday – Thursday.
4. I don’t know what to say.
You’ll work alongside another volunteer for a while. You’ll get to hear them on the phone talking to others and you’ll get to have them listen to you talk to clients. Love INC has many notes and scripts to help you remember what to say a long the way.
God also seems to often provide the right words to say for the moment. Many times on the phone I’ve heard volunteers listen and pray for our clients and God provided the right words of comfort and encouragement.
5. I’m scared that I’m not good enough
God doesn’t look for good perfect people. He looks for people who are willing to serve him. Many of those who have been broken the most are best on the phone. Their experiences allow them to mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice.
